Movie Review: Devil by M. Night Shyamalan

I went yesterday to watch Devil, the new movie by M. Night Shymalan… to say i had high expectations of the movie is an understatement… for i was waiting for it’s release ever since i saw the promo back in September! From the trailers and the ads you realize that there are people trapped in an elevator and it’s somehow the work of the devil.

We know M. Night Shyamanal. We know how quirky he is, how he always has some trick up his sleeve somewhere… how you must watch but not take what you see for granted because what you see can totally have another meaning. Add a devil and horror to the mix and you will get a movie that you cannot miss!

Sadly… from the narration at the begining of the movie and up till the point the actors are all trapped in the elevator… that is it. Period. There is nothing else but wait for what the narrator told you beforehand that will happen. It is more like “Scream” and “I know what you did last summer” in style than say “The Village” or “Sixth Sense”…

I waited for the quirk… the twist… the M. Night Shyamalan touch in the end… the thing that kept me going on during that movie even though i guessed halfway down the movie who was the devil on my own… nothing happened. No quirk. The credits rolled and lights went on and we battled our way out of the movie trying to avoid the mounds of trash left on the floor by civilized movie watchers… That was it.

What happened M. Night Shyamalan? That movie was not even remotely scary! It didn’t even put me off riding the elevator this morning! … So if you are planning to watch it, keep in mind that it will be just another scary movie and leave the M. Night Shyamalan expectation out of it… you will be fine.
