Taste of Kuwait… The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly!

I went to Taste of Kuwait yesterday. If you are not familiar with the concept yet, it is an event where you can order from one menu that belongs to several local restaurants and dine in stylish setting while you watch people around you. Some of of the proceeds go to the Kuwait Thalassemia Society which means you are donating money as you are eating… not bad!

Before i show you my wobbly blackberry pictures… i would like to write what i did not like about it. Why? Not for the sake of cynism of course, but since this is going to be an annual event i thought they could get those comments as pointers for next years event… if every one just says wow and good and excellent how will they improve?

The good

I like the collection of restaurants, i liked the young sweet q8y boys and girls who take our orders. So helpful and sweet… i wanted to be one my self :p i liked the style of the place, modern Japanese garden like, i liked the fact that the dress code is not posh and smart rather more like smart casual. If you wear jeans with a nice shirt you are good to go…  i liked the tree with the ribbons so much though i didn’t get to buy a ribbon -we were out of cash!-

The bad

  • The tables and chairs didn’t really go with the style and design of the place.
  • There are no ashtrays on the tables, nor are any condiments like ketchup or salt and pepper available.
  • The plates reminded me of the ones being used in KUNIV cafeteria… i would have chosen nicer plates to fit with the whole theme but its not a major concern
  • There are not much of side dish choices… for example for burger you would have loved to have a plate of fries on the side… i personally would have liked to have some side veggies. the menu is also not so vegeterian friendly
  • We keep getting reminded that the minimum charge is 5 kd… over and over again… it got kinda annoying
  • They could have 3 different menus: A breakfast Menu, a Lunch Menu, and a Dinner Menu… some of the dishes in the menu were a bit heavy to choose as dinner… but that is my own opinion anyways
  • They only take cash! There is no cash machines around not even the portable ones that come in a car… for a moment there we panicked because we had not thought it we don’t have enough cash – we both don’t carry much cash-
  • The garden setting could have used more lightening… it was kinda dim… sitting inside is definitely much better… i would recommend sector C
  • My blouse has gone to the dry cleaners… it smells like frying oil and cooking 😦 they need more … what is it that takes the smell out of a place? Fans?
  • They said on their website that they would give guest a goodie bag of cookies esp. that the admin fee is 1.5 KD.. we got nothing… we eyed some cookies on the way out after we paid but no one offered us any 😦

The ugly

The only bad thing is that you can easily trip and fall because the floors are uneven and there are some cracks or different levels. I would recommend you leave your heels at home and go with something flat or kitten heels at most, unless you want to go to P2BK with a cast on your leg… Defasha won’t do…

To the pictures… also here is a link to their menu… they will be there for today Friday and tomorrow Saturday

The menu

Complimentary crostini with olive paste and cream cheese

Waiting for the food...

Halloum Vermicelli appetizer from Ayyami

Butootee's Bistro 86 Burger...no side fries felt weird...

Butotee's Spaghetti Bolonaise from Melanzene

Caramel Macciato from Q Cafe with a tiny brownie

Athba's Bakery Cheesecake

Complimentary Mini Tiramisu from Melanzene... Butootee was very happy!

I likes the bonzai like trees

The electricity went out for a few minutes... luckily we had our candle to keep us company 🙂

Now those chairs would have fit in perfectly with the theme!

The ribbons tree...

Another view of the ribbon tree...

Ducati

I liked this blinking board so much i almost stole it and took it home with me 🙂

  3. Bel 3afiya … Looking at your pictures, the place seemed empty. Did you notice price difference?

I’ve not been there, but I would recommend serving small portions of everything or come up with samplers of best sellers from all restaurants, just to allow visitors taste all of them 🙂

It wasn’t empty… just ain’t as crowded as other places on a Thursday night…

what do you mean by a price difference?

This is actually what they did… they have the top 5 dishes of each restaurant in the menu and the portions were not that big 🙂

Is it just me? None of the food looked appetizing in any way whatsoever :/ it looks like it’s one giant mishmash of haphazard food and meals. Thanks for your informative post!

    Hi All! 🙂
This is Noor (one of the founders of “Taste of Kuwait” event)
I am happy for all of you that enjoyed our event! As for you Danderma, I am soooo sorry that u didn’t enjoy it as much!
We really tried our best. Inshallah next time when we get money from sponsors so we can do a more “wow” job! (insallah ya rab). Ufortunately more than 90% of the moeny spent on the event was our money (my sisters and I – and I am talking we paid alot! all we got from sponsors ws less than 10% of the total amount)
I love your blog and we do appreciate your constructive comments on how to improve ourselves for next time (I already added three of your “ugly” comments on my list of “to dos” for next time – most of the others were already on the list 🙂 ) – unfortunately not all bloggers use constructive negative comments in their bloggs – but go straight to trying to hurt other people’s feelings.

Now for the fun part 🙂 – let us answer those “ugly comments” :
•The tables and chairs didn’t really go with the style and design of the place :
TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE CHAIRS!! Our designer (and my sister) May was in tears when she knew that “efloosna 7’alisat” and we cannot afford anything more in tune with the fabolous design she did – next time inshallah!
•There are no ashtrays on the tables, nor are any condiments like ketchup or salt and pepper available:
We did have “no smoking” signs on all tables since it was agreed prior to the event that it is a non smkoing venue – but you are right, we should atleast have a smoking section for smokers next time. Ketchup is the kitcen’s responsibility (we do not own the restaurants, and most dishes that needed ketchup, had the sauce on the dish) – salt and pepper was there, but not on the tables. But, saying that, I know where u’re coming from – so next year provide ketchup and salt and pepper – check 🙂
•The plates reminded me of the ones being used in KUNIV cafeteria… i would have chosen nicer plates to fit with the whole theme but its not a major concern:
We bought the plates ourselves – not the restaurants – we got them frm IKEA (more than 10,000 pates for this year and future use) so we couldn’t afford anything more fancy 😦 sorry.
•There are not much of side dish choices… for example for burger you would have loved to have a plate of fries on the side… i personally would have liked to have some side veggies. the menu is also not so vegeterian friendly :
I TOTALLY AGREE! (this is one of the comments that I got alot – so it is already on our next event’s “to do” list)
•We keep getting reminded that the minimum charge is 5 kd… over and over again… it got kinda annoying :
Hmmm……how about this: next time we put a note on the menu itself, or on the table, so it becomes less awkward?
•They could have 3 different menus: A breakfast Menu, a Lunch Menu, and a Dinner Menu… some of the dishes in the menu were a bit heavy to choose as dinner… but that is my own opinion anyways:
I would love to do that – but it depends on the restaurants hun… they specify the hours.
•They only take cash! There is no cash machines around not even the portable ones that come in a car… for a moment there we panicked because we had not thought it we don’t have enough cash – we both don’t carry much cash-:
We were going to provide not one but three KNET machines !:(, but at the last minute they told us no, becuase we are not a company but indivduals- so that would be solved next year inshallah, becuase we will have a registered company for us girls and therefore will have and will provide KNET machines in the next event 🙂 (this is another comment that came out alot )
•The garden setting could have used more lightening… it was kinda dim… sitting inside is definitely much better… i would recommend sector C :
    Done and done!
•My blouse has gone to the dry cleaners… it smells like frying oil and cooking they need more … what is it that takes the smell out of a place? Fans? :
For us to put industrial shafa6at, it would cost us a small fortune – we had fans and tried them – didn’t work…..we’re still looking for an answer to tht dillemma
•They said on their website that they would give guest a goodie bag of cookies esp. that the admin fee is 1.5 KD.. we got nothing… we eyed some cookies on the way out after we paid but no one offered us any :
I am sorry 😦 they were there for grabs! we invited everybody to take one and support he homebusinesses it represents – I guess it was your luck, sorry fr that.

We have more points on the “to do” list – but we will be happy to receive or listen to any of your constructive comments (and this mssage goes to everyone not only Denderma) we would love to see how we can improve for next year.

    SAm7ooona 3ala ay egsooor 🙂 🙂
(and please reember that e7na ma kan warana thahar or shareka ted3amna with moeny or resources. kel shay cheftooh kan min majhoodna e7na bas – all we had was ourselves and my lovely volunteers, and we did everything from scratch, from digging the land to make a pond, to putting the grass on the ground (it wasn’t safir’s) – to putting the rocks, to ,to ,to…. so please itha gasarna ma3akum sam7oona and inshallah next time will be better 🙂 )

      Dearest Noor…

thank you for posting the comment… one correction… i did enjoy my time alot and i told my whole family to go and try it 🙂 i think yours was an exceptional effort to bring this together o y36ekom alf alf 3afiya… to be fair i had one ugly comment about the floors bs el bajee were in the bad section 😀

I applaud you for not having smokers breathe down our necks with their fume… i am so happy… i cannot eat where there are fumes… plz keep it smoke free it won’t kill them to stop smoking for one hour… by ashtray i mean a place where you could discard your napkins/toothpicks/olive pits/things you do not like in your food 🙂

As for the plates it’s my own personal taste hon in Ikea there are better plates “in my opinion again” … better as in they would fit the modern style of the place better… after all they are just plates… i feel for your sister after all the effort she has gone through to design the really stylish setting… Insha2 Allah next year you will have more sponsors and you would be able to do wonders with it 🙂 same goes for the cache machine cars which really sucks! You must be a company to hire them?!

Again thank you very very much 3la your effort… not every one would have put so much time, money, and energy into organizing such events and Allah yewafegkom insha2 Allah … i am waiting for next year to visti again insha2 Allah 😀
